    Description

Choice Very Fine Emperor Septimius Severus Roman Empire denarius coin, 3.45g, issued 209 CE, RIC 229 (rated as Rare).
Certified by NGC to Ch VF, Strike 4/5, Surface 4/5.
    Very rare reverse type depicting
    River God Tyne
    (or
    Oceanus
) reclining, seldom offered. David Sear in RSC speculates that the River God could be the Tyne in North Britain. Severus was in Northern Britain repairing the Wall in preparation for Scottish campaigns during 209, when this coin was minted.
Obverse: SEVERVS PIVS AVG, laureate head of emperor facing right.
    Reverse: P M TR P XVII COS III P P,
River God naked to waist, reclining right, resting elbow on rock from which water gushes, holds horn-shaped shell and rudder, at feet is a sea-horse
